Tangible Tips for Handling the Endless Stress in Project Management

Dr. Steve Flannes shares his insights on the five stress management techniques that have proven successful with project managers.

steve_flannesToday, I have the distinct pleasure to chat with Dr. Steve Flannes about his tangible tips for handling the endless stress in Project Management.

Dr. Flannes describes why Project management is inherently stressful due to matrix management, singular problem solving, project unpredictability and trends such as virtual teams and the implicit expectation of a 24/7 work cycle. He will help us understand why dealing effectively with stress is not just about feeling better. It is about maximizing performance and ability to excel at our work.

Dr. Flannes will provide us with five stress management techniques that have proven successful with project managers. He will also give us an overview of global research results on the stress management techniques most preferred by project managers.

Dr. Flannes is principal of Flannes Associates and is the co-author of Essential People Skills for Project Managers, a book devoted to the often messy and complicated people issues often faced by project managers. This book has been translated into Russian and Japanese.

He is a licensed psychologist and has taught at the graduate level of the University of Notre Dame and for the University of California, Berkeley. He is a frequent keynote speaker for professional organizations and regularly presents to a variety of organizations, including the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the SAS Users Group International Conference.

  • How did you get interested in exploring the topic of Stress Management in project management and give us a background on the work you have done on this important topic?
  • Why should project managers be concerned about stress?

  • Now let’s take a step back and define for us “Chronic Stress” and its impact.

  • You say that the unique individual traits, attributes, and behaviors (what you refer to as “Individual Differences”) create a greater propensity for vulnerability to stress. Can you tell us a little more about what you mean by “Individual Differences” and their impact in how we respond to and manage stress?

  • Why is the conventional wisdom on how we should manage stress is not sufficient and why it is hard for a lot of us to change and try new ways to manage stress?

  • You recommend adding to the conventional wisdom for handling stress the interpersonal skills and three research based approaches. Walk us through the approaches your recommend.

  • Do you have additional recommendations on how to manage stress?
